iHow it is calculated

Trigonometric functions link an angle to the side ratios of a right triangle. The angle can be given in degrees or radians (180° = π radians):

sin = opposite ÷ hypotenuse · cos = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse · tan = sin ÷ cos

sin 30° = 0.5, cos 60° = 0.5, tan 45° = 1. At 90°, the tangent is undefined (cos 90° = 0).

?Frequently asked questions

What are sine, cosine and tangent?

Trigonometric functions linking angles to the side ratios of a right triangle: sine = opposite ÷ hypotenuse, cosine = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse, tangent = sine ÷ cosine.

How do I calculate the sine of an angle?

Enter the angle and choose degrees or radians; the sine appears instantly. For example, sin 30° = 0.5.

What is the difference between degrees and radians?

A full circle is 360 degrees or 2π radians. The radian is the “natural” unit, used in advanced mathematics.

How do I convert degrees to radians?

Multiply degrees by π ÷ 180. For example, 180° = π radians ≈ 3.1416; 90° = π/2 ≈ 1.5708.

What are sin 30°, cos 60° and tan 45°?

sin 30° = 0.5, cos 60° = 0.5, and tan 45° = 1. These are common, easy-to-remember values.

Why is the tangent of 90° undefined?

Because tan = sin ÷ cos, and cos 90° = 0. Division by zero is undefined, so the tangent tends to infinity.

What is trigonometry used for?

Construction, navigation, physics, engineering, computer graphics and computing inaccessible distances and heights.

What is the unit circle?

A circle of radius 1 where the coordinates of a point at a given angle are (cos, sin). It helps understand function values for any angle.
