iHow it is calculated

The arithmetic mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value after sorting, and the standard deviation measures the spread around the mean:

mean = (x₁ + x₂ ++ xₙ) ÷ n

For 12, 7, 19, 3, 9, 14: sum = 64, n = 6, so the mean = 64 ÷ 6 ≈ 10.67. The median (sorted: 3, 7, 9, 12, 14, 19) = (9 + 12) ÷ 2 = 10.5.

?Frequently asked questions

How is the arithmetic mean calculated?

Add all the values and divide by how many there are. For 12, 7, 19, 3, 9, 14: sum 64 ÷ 6 ≈ 10.67.

What is the median and how does it differ from the mean?

The median is the middle value after sorting (the average of the two middle ones if the count is even). Unlike the mean, it is not swayed by extreme values.

What does the standard deviation show?

It measures how spread out the values are around the mean. A small deviation means values close to the mean; a large one means they are dispersed.

What is the difference between sample and population?

The sample deviation divides by (n − 1) and is used when the data is a subset; the population deviation divides by n, when you have all the data.

How do I enter the numbers?

Separate them with spaces, commas or new lines. Decimals work with a comma (3,5) or a dot (3.5).

What is the weighted average and how does it differ?

In a weighted average each value has a weight (e.g. credits or coefficients). Multiply each value by its weight, add the results and divide by the sum of the weights.

What is the mode?

The mode is the value that appears most often in a data set. A set can have one mode, several (bimodal) or none.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is sum ÷ count, the median is the middle value, and the mode is the most frequent one. For skewed data (with outliers), the median is often more representative.

How do I calculate my school grade average?

Add all the grades and divide by how many there are. If grades have coefficients (e.g. an exam counts double), use the weighted average.
