iHow it is calculated
Three mandatory deductions are taken from the gross salary, in order: first the social contributions (CAS, CASS), then income tax on what remains, after subtracting the personal deduction (if it applies):
net = gross − CAS(25%) − CASS(10%) − Tax(10% × [gross − CAS − CASS − deduction])
For a gross salary of 8,000 RON (above the deduction ceiling): CAS = 2,000, CASS = 800, taxable base 5,200 RON, tax 520 RON, so net 4,680 RON. The total employer cost (CAM 2.25%) is 8,180 RON. For lower salaries (under ~6,050 RON) the personal deduction is added, raising the net.
?Frequently asked questions
How is the net salary calculated from gross in 2026?
CAS (25%) and CASS (10%) are subtracted from the gross, then income tax (10%) is applied to the base left after the personal deduction. The result is the net salary received.
What rates are withheld from the salary in 2026?
CAS (pension) 25%, CASS (health) 10% and income tax 10% — all withheld from the gross. The employer pays CAM 2.25% separately.
Why is the net salary about 58% of gross?
Because CAS, CASS and income tax are withheld, adding up to roughly 41.5% of the gross in the standard case without a personal deduction.
What is the personal deduction and who benefits?
It is an amount exempt from tax for gross salaries up to the minimum wage + 2,000 RON. It grows with the number of dependents and for employees under 26.
Does the employer pay the taxes or do I?
The contributions and tax are withheld from your gross salary and paid by the employer on your behalf. In addition, the employer pays CAM (2.25%) from its own budget.
What is CAM and who pays it?
The Work Insurance Contribution (2.25%) is paid entirely by the employer, on top of the gross salary — which is why the total employer cost is higher than the gross.
Are meal vouchers taxed?
Yes. Since 2024 meal vouchers are subject to CASS (10%) and income tax (10%), but not CAS. You can include them in the advanced calculation.
How much do I get if I work part-time?
The percentage rates stay the same but apply to a gross proportional to the hours worked. Switch to “Part-time” to see the difference.
How do I calculate gross from net (reverse)?
Select “Net” as the calculation mode and enter the desired net amount — the calculator finds the matching gross salary and the employer cost.
What is the minimum wage in 2026?
The gross minimum wage is used as the reference for the personal deduction. Check the official value on mmuncii.ro; the calculator uses it for the selected year.
Are bonuses taxed like the regular salary?
Yes. Bonuses, performance pay and the 13th salary are added to the month’s gross and taxed identically (CAS 25%, CASS 10%, income tax 10%). The main exception is meal vouchers, which are exempt from CAS.
Is there an upper ceiling for CAS and CASS?
For salary income there is no upper cap: CAS and CASS apply to the entire gross salary, however high it is. Ceilings only exist for income from independent activities (self-employed / PFA).
How do I work out the net hourly pay?
Divide the monthly net by the hours worked in the month (about 168 hours for a full-time norm). For a daily figure, divide by the number of working days in that month.
Is the displayed net exactly what lands in my account?
Yes, unless you have extra withholdings. Garnishments, payroll-deducted instalments, union fees or advances may still be subtracted — these are not part of the tax calculation.
