The day of year is found by counting the days from 1 January (day 1) to the chosen date. Leap years have 366 days, others 365:
9 July 2026 is day 190 of 365 — 175 days remain. 31 December is day 365 (366 in a leap year).

365 days in an ordinary year and 366 in a leap year (with 29 February). 2026 has 365 days, 2028 has 366.
The result also shows the days remaining = total days in the year − current day. On 9 July 2026, 175 days remain.
After 29 February, in a leap year every date has an ordinal one higher than in an ordinary year. So 31 December is day 365 normally and day 366 in a leap year.
In common use, the “day of year” (ordinal date) is the day’s number within that year (1–366). It should not be confused with the astronomical Julian date.
